Tsuiokuhen: Episode 3 - The Previous Night at the Mountain Home
Kenshin and Tomoe started living as husband and wife in their house on top of the mountain. One night, Kenshin suggested that they should grow some crops. He said that his father was a farmer. So the next morning they started planting radishes in the lot around their house.
One day, Iizuka visited them. He told Kenshin that the Shogunate has taken back their full control over. According to him, the rebels including Takasugi were captured and oppressed while Katsura was never found again since the incident in Kyoto. But he said, that the plan for revolution was still alive so they would still need Kenshin’s skills. He gave Kenshin some money and medicine that came from Katagai. He said that he should hide his identity by selling some medicine.
Since then, Kenshin and Tomoe used to go down to the village to sell their medicine and the people were very convinced that they were a couple living a very simple life. One time, Tomoe asked Kenshin how long they had to live that way. Kenshin answered and said that until the rebellion is renewed.
One day, it was raining and Iizuka paid another visit. Kenshin told him that he was happy living that way and he never again killed anyone. Iizuka told himself as he was leaving that Kenshin was weakening. Tomoe told Kenshin that she didn’t feel comfortable whenever Iizuka was around. That same day, they found out that their crops were ruined by too much rain. Tomoe felt really bad about that. That night, while Kenshin was sleeping, Tomoe found her diary and she remembered her ex-fiancé. When she found out that Kiyosato was killed, she felt really bad that no one could talk to her, not even her brother Enishi. While reminiscing those times, she cried.
Katagai was keeping an eye on Iizuka because the rebels’ side was starting to have suspicion. He found out that Iizuka was helping the shoguns with their plan to assassinate Kenshin. He heard Iizuka talking to some men who on the side of the Shogunate but he was caught and was killed. Enishi was working for the Shogunate too and he was ordered to do whatever he was supposed to do.
Enishi visited Tomoe and she was surprised. She introduced him to Kenshin. While having their conversation (Kenshin was already outside working on their crops), Enishi told Tomoe that the Shogunate was after Kenshin and he thought that she would be on their side. But Tomoe asked him to leave and go back to their father in Edo. Also in that day, Kenshin and Tomoe had a good harvest.
That night, Kenshin told Tomoe that he found inner peace in him because of her. It was something his master, Seijuro Hiko, was trying to teach him. Then, Tomoe started talking about her family. She said that her father worked for the Shogunate but never had a high-ranking position while her mother died after giving birth to Enishi. She also told him about her ex-fiancé that died while on his bodyguard mission.
Since then, Kenshin started showing more love for Tomoe. One day, while on their way back home, he promised her that he would protect her. Because of that, Tomoe started to feel something very special for Kenshin too. She admitted to herself that she used to hate Kenshin and wanted to avenge Kiyosato but all that hatred had gone.
That night, Tomoe left Kenshin while he was asleep. She said it was for the sake of both of them. Kenshin woke up and started looking for her. Iizuka came and told him that Tomoe was the traitor. He told him about the Kiyosato and after reading Tomoe’s diary, he realized that he was the one who killed the ex-fiancé Tomoe was telling him about.
