Yahiko and Kaoru were looking for Kenshin. They found him hanging clothes and they told him to watch out because Sanosuke might come anytime. Kaoru didn’t want Kenshin to fight him but Kenshin said it might be inevitable. He wondered why Sanosuke hated the Ishin Shishi (imperialists) so much.

Sanosuke was playing with dice while remembering his past when he was still a kid. Captain Sagara, leader of the Sekihou Group was talking to Sanosuke about changing the government to something better where everyone is equal. A soldier for the Ishin, Shindo Tatewaki came and said that he had a message for Captain Sagara from the general. Sanosuke threw the dice that hit Godhei who was sneaking in his house. Godhei wanted to know how things were going for Sanosuke.

Dr. Genzai told Kaoru and Yahiko that one of his patients knew that Sanosuke Sagara was a member of the Sekihou group. The Sekihou Group helped the Ishin in the revolution but for some reason made a lie to the people that the price of rice would be cut in half so the Ishin government was forced to punish them. Ayame and Suzume came and Kaoru asked why Kenshin wasn’t with them. They said that Kenshin was with Sanosuke so Kaoru and Yahiko went to look for them. They found them near the river fighting. Godhei was watching them too.

Sanosuke saw Kenshin’s Sakaba (reverse-edged sword). He attacked, Kenshin dodged it and hit him at the back knocking him down but Sanosuke got up right away. Kaoru and Yahiko were amazed with Sanosuke’s endurance. Sanosuke continued attacking but Kenshin said that Sanosuke’s Zanba was too heavy so he would have limited moves and Kenshin could see them easily. Kenshin hit Sanosuke with his Hiten Mitsurugi, Ryu Sou Sen and Sanosuke was knocked down. As he was lying down, he remembered his past again.

The Ishin government wanted to earn the people’s trust so they told stories through the Sekihou Group. But they couldn’t back it up so they used the Sekihou group making it appear that they lied so that the people could forget about it. Captain Sagara said he knew it but Shindo brought an army with him to execute the whole Sekihou Group. The army opened fire killing the whole Sekihou group including Captain Sagara. Before he died, he threw Sanosuke away to save him.

Suddenly, Godhei shot Kenshin but the bullet hit Kenshin’s sword. He then grabbed Kaoru and Yahiko and threatened to kill them but Sanosuke knocked him down with his Zanba. Godhei tried to shoot Kenshin again but Kenshin used his Do Ryu Sen. Sanosuke got up to continue the fight. After telling them how much he hated the Ishin, he raised his sword for another attack but Kenshin cut the Zanba into to two and used the Ryu Tsui Sen. Sanosuke was still standing but he couldn’t fight anymore. Kenshin told him that there are still things that has to be changed so he uses his sword to protect people. Sanosuke realized that Kenshin and Captain Sagara had the same goals.

Sanosuke passed out so they took him to Dr. Genzai. While walking, they saw the same men who fought Sanosuke and Sanosuke scared them away.
